Short of the Week: Consent by Jason Reitman

  1. "Consent" by Jason Reitman is a satirical comedy that makes fun of the awkwardness of talking about sexual consent by using lighting and facial close-ups.
The lighting throughout this short film is very dim but warm, giving a romantic feel. The corners of the frame get hazy and blacked-out when the lawyers come into play, leading the viewer to wonder if this is an imaginary or a literal satire. The two teenagers' faces are half-lit throughout leaving their intentions in the dark. The lawyers are more fully lit although still dim, being more straight-forward with their function.
The close-ups range from intimate (in the beginning budding romance) to awkward (with lawyers in the background). When the guy pulls out a sexual consent form (as opposed to what the viewer thought would be a condom), the close-ups jump out to a medium shot, giving a more distant and "formal" look.

  2. Jason Reitman's "Consent" is a comedy based around the necessary but potentially off-putting moment of asking for sexual consent.

This may not have been a decision made entirely for irony considering this was filmed in 2004, but the film emulates a cheesy made for TV romantic flick. This is achieved through the shot choice and dim mood lighting.

I feel this short could have been aided by some background music that strategically cuts off when the lawyers appeared, the lack of audio work outside of dialogue is somewhat lackluster.

  3. “Consent” by Jason Reitman (2004) works really well as a satirical parody of the process of sexual consent. I really enjoyed the ridiculously cliched and cheesy opening, which set the tone of the piece. On a technical level, there was a lot to enjoy. I really liked the warm lighting and the vignetting (it may have been a tad too heavy at some points). It was fairly simple on the technical level, but the filmmakers did a great job making the style subservient to the film’s premise. There were a few abrupt audio cuts that were a bit jarring, but other than that the film was quite good on a technical level. I also liked how the filmmaker cut to a close up of the couple’s individual faces to highlight their emotional response to something the lawyers said. In fact, I really liked how the couple both emotionally “acted out” what the lawyers said in monotone fashion. I also like the decision to have the couple represented by their opposite genders. I think that made everything a bit more formal and shrewd, rather then some sort of representation of them selves. In addition, it also reversed the traditional stereotypes of who initiates things (the female lawyer is pushing for more while the male lawyer is defensive). Overall, Reitman took a simple but humorous premise and made a very interesting and enjoyable film out of it. The film’s pacing was quick and it never felt boring. And I really like how they took the concept to a new level with the film’s final moments.

  4. This short film was one of the funnier short films I have seen, because of its pacing and the subject matter. "Consent" by Jason Reitman, takes a taboo subject like sexual consent and turns it on its head and looks at it from a comedic standpoint. The entire point of the short film is to satirize a normally avoided subject and even takes advantage of the taboo nature of the subject, for example, when some sexual acts are referred to simply as numbers and the lawyers refer to them as if the audience definitely knows what they are talking about. For a 2004 film, I think Jason Reitman used pacing and writing extremely well. At least well enough that 12 years later, it is still making me chuckle at several different points in the film. I think it was interesting that nearly all of the film is from one side of the conversation, which played to some of the humor but also may have restricted some of the content. I think the lighting scheme was a little dark for the comedic text, but as the setting is in a room where a couple is about to hook up, it made sense. I think the film was overall shot well and, more than anything, its writing was the best part.

  5. "Consent" is a funny short film about the awkwardness of the first intimate moment between young people. The main comedic element is the boy asking the girl to sign a sexual consent form, and her immediately suggesting her lawyer look over it. Suddenly, her lawyer pops up behind her. His lawyer pops up behind him soon after. The cheesy vignettes and lighting succeeded in making it lighthearted and setting the stage for the humor. The climax of the comedic elements was the lawyers reading off the sexual acts. I thought the plot twist of the random girl walking in and asking to go get her lawyer was hilarious. This short is a very funny take on a serious concept. I enjoyed it immensely.

  7. This short film was very much like a Saturday Night Live skit. "Consent" I thought was interesting because it deals with some contemporary issues in a comedic way. In today's world of overt political correctness it was funny to see that tendency taken to such an extreme level with something as personal as our sexual relations. Even though the two main characters are discussing something so intimate, the legalistic dialogue makes the situation seem so much more amusing then it would realistically be.

I thought that the cinematography did a good job of helping to tell the story. The back and forth between the shots of the girl and her lawyer and the guy and his lawyer really serve to emphasize the give and take of the negotiation they are having. Also, the transition from close up shots to slightly wider medium shots illustrates the change in tone from the romantic discussion to the legal negotiation.

  8. "Consent" by Jason Reitman was a satirical comedy which depicted how people are about sexual consent. I was definitely a different piece, but in its own way was an accurate representation. I found it accurate because sexual consent is taken so seriously on college campuses that any sign of no sexual consent leads to the entrance of lawyers. Throughout the short film, you could see how precise the consent has to be and how boundaries are made. It was pretty humorous and was the perfect example of a satirical piece. However, I am not sure where Jason Reitman was trying to go with that ending. It definitely seemed like that guy was about to get the consent from both girls. Ultimately, the short film was a pretty accurate representation on how serious people can be about sexual consent.

  9. "Consent" was not what I expected it to be at all. Given the title and the first ten seconds of the short, the last thing I expected it to be was a comedy. For a short from 2004 I still found it relevant and extremely funny. It wasn't overly explicit but was still understandable. I liked the banter between the lawyers, thought it had a good range of shots, especially for the reveal of the lawyers. However, I thought that the lighting was a bit strange. It was decently lit on the characters but had a strange black fade around the edges of the shot. I'm not sure if that was supposed to be part of the mood in the bedroom, but I was not a huge fan of it. Other than the technical aspects that seem a little outdated, I really enjoyed the short and its comedic timing.

  10. Consent is short fllm and is very funny and interesting. One couples were talking on the bed and they plan to have sex but the man bring a piece of contract. The sexual consent form is a form that they need to sign before they having sex. The couples called each of their lawyers in order to sign the consent before having sex. They negotiate some rules about the sex. For example, they both agree to have oral sex but the boy want 10 minutes oral sex while the girl only want 5 minutes. Some parts of the movie are very funny and makes people laughing. Some teenages problems in that movie are often happened around us. In fact, every couples want to sign the sexual consent form before them having sex. That will make the sexual activities appropriated. The most important part of the film is has showed the emotions that every young people had before they having sex. It seems mysterious。 The lights has also play an import role in this short film. It makes people feel relaxing and that makes easy for us to see the characters emotions change.

  11. Consent is a short film thats faces sexual consent in a comical and somewhat awkard way. The beginning shot sets up a romantic feel after a blind date then they begin to talk about having sex when the guy brings up a consent form. The next shot is lawyers talking what the two parties will agree upon anything from kissing and dry humping to 10 minute oral sex to meeting parents and giving each other clothes to keep around campus. The film is a light comical way to highlight a moment before intercourse that college kids and people who have never had sex experience before having intercourse.

  12. "Consent" by Jason Reitman was a comedic film that made a very awkward situation comedic. The film was shot in a way that the framing was so perfect. The way that the lawyers were kept out of the shots until the boy and girl mentioned them was genius. Also, the way that the lawyers were positioned behind the boy and girl was a smart idea because it was like they were on different teams and gave that feeling off while watching the film. The lighting in the film was very intense too, it had a yellow tint to the picture while just making the faces of the characters the prominent details that stood out. It was a very amazing film, and the lighting was really well done.
